As a science, audiology is a fairly young discipline. It grew up out of the need for hearing aids that were being widely distributed to the returning veterans of WWII in the mid-1940s who had suffered damage to their hearing. From there a fascinating new field of scientific research into the causes and treatments of a loss of hearing and balance opened up and audiology was born.
Today, audiologists use a variety of tools at their disposal e.g. hearing tests, optoacoustic emission measurements, videonystagmography and electrophysiologic tests to determine whether the client has difficulty hearing and where the problem lies: the outer, middle or inner ear, the auditory nerve and/or the central nervous system. Once the problem is revealed the audiologist can suggest an appropriate treatment such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, for example.
Another important aspect of their work is rehabilitation for people with hearing or balance issues, tinnitus and coping with hearing loss. Their clients can range in age from infants to the elderly.
More and more medical professionals are taking an interest in audiology and making it their choice of career in medicine.
